The Savage Garden

When I first came to Dhaka from Chittagong, I found it to be a concrete jungle: a canopy of high-rises over a habitat of machines. Greenery is hard to find here…environmental degradation is accelerating, persistent and unabated, making me feel disconcerted.

Without any nature, my mind is unbalanced as I passed my days in greenery, as I can remember my first memory about the Golden Shower tree in my primary school in Chittagong that made my mind peaceful always then. I think “what will happen if Dhaka was declared an uninhabitable and unlivable dead city, and all the people living here left this place?!”

Nature would ‘take over’ again; nature would gobble up the abandoned city, like this vehicle dump yard found in the middle of Dhaka. The foliage slowly covers the dumped vehicles, as if nature is winning over the man-made machines and all artifacts.
